New RSS Reader from Resco

Yet another RSS Reader, this one from Resco, of the Photo Viewer app fame. This is a native s60v3 app, and a darn good one, depending on what you’re looking for in an RSS Reader.

I’m a pretty heavy Google Reader user, but Resco is a very viable alternative. Setup is freakin awesome. It asks you to select what categories you’re interested in, which then automatically selects numerous different feeds for you that they have preloaded. You can also custom select your feeds.

If there’s a feed that you want in there, you can either type it in, or Resco RSS Reader also supports importing (and exporting) OPML files, which makes things super easy.

Rating: ****

The first screen that opens is called "Channels," and this is the list of channels based on the categories you selected in the setup phase. If you arrow right, you get to your subscriptions, which by default can either all be collapsed or expanded. The titles will scroll if they are too long, so you can easily know which feed you’re looking at.

One thing I don’t like is how long it takes to update. Also, there’s no "automatically update all" option. You have manual update, Always Ask, or On Expand. You can, however, set which browser you want an article to open in if you drill down. This is handy if you have feeds that incorporate pictures or whatnot.

There are tons of options, though, as you’re reading your feeds. The most used, probably, will be the "send" feature. You can send just a story, the whole channel, or all the stories in one channel. Noticably missing, though, is the SMS option. You can send via MMS, Email, Bluetooth, IR, and Web Upload (not sure what this one’s for) so you can easily share a story with someone else.

You can also add your own custom tabs at the top, if you want to have a "Cellphones" tab, a "Work" tab, or however you want to set it up. It’s pretty customizable.

Personally, I think I’ll stick with Google Reader for its ability to sync my feeds between the phone and browser, and I can mark an article from the phone and pull it up on a browser easily. But if offline reading is your thing, or just much more feed management features, then Resco’s RSS Reader might be right up your alley. Comes with a full-on 7 day trial, after which the software costs $12USD

Regarding the missing SMS Send option — do you see any way to at least use Copy/Paste to grab the article link and do a manual SMS send, pasting the link?

    thx!
